Navy Pier is Illinois’ most popular and distinctive attraction with nearly 9 million visitors in 2010. Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) is a non-profit, professional theater company located at Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois.Its more than six hundred annual performances performed 48 weeks of the year include its critically acclaimed Shakespeare series, its Worlds Stage touring productions, and youth education and family oriented programming. The Centennial Vision reimagines Navy Pier as it approaches its 100th anniversary in 2016 and beyond. “ We are building a theater for the future,” said Barbara Gaines, artistic director of Chicago Shakespeare. They also will greatly expand what Chicago Shakespeare is capable of producing and presenting at one of the city’s most important entertainment and tourist destinations. The Pier is celebrating its 100th birthday in 2016, so it is undergoing a huge, multi-year renovation. The plans involve a dramatic and innovative repurposing of the space that will change the face of the Pier. At a press conference on March 2, 2016, Chicago Shakespeare will formally announce its long-anticipated plans to expand its footprint on Navy Pier and take over the space formerly occupied by the concert and performance venue known as the Skyline Stage.
